1. AC/DC Power Bricks & Adapters

These are the power blocks connected via a cord to your device (like laptops or external hard drives). They take AC electricity and convert it into a specific DC output (e.g., 19.5V, 3.42A). When replacing these, you must match the output voltage, ensure the amperage/wattage meets or exceeds your original requirement, and confirm the connector polarity and plug size are correct.

2. Desktop Power Hubs and Modules

These sit directly on your desk or clamp onto the edge, providing quick access to mains outlets and USB-A/C ports. They declutter your workspace by preventing the need to crawl under your desk to plug in laptops, phones, or monitors. Many modular units also incorporate surge protection and data/AV ports.

Benchtop/Variable DC Power Supplies

Used widely by hobbyists and DIY electronics enthusiasts, these desktop units allow users to dial in exact voltage and amperage (e.g., 0-30V, 0-10A) for circuit testing and battery charging.

How to Select the Right Desktop PSU

For Power Bricks: Always check the rating label on your original supply. The voltage must match perfectly, the wattage/amperage can be higher but should not be lower, and the polarity symbols must match.

For Desktop Hubs: Calculate the combined draw of your devices and select a hub with an appropriate rating, ideally one that meets workplace safety regulations (e.g., BS6396 in the UK) if used in a professional or educational environment.
