Constant current (CC) LED drivers regulate a fixed amount of current to a series of LEDs by automatically adjusting the voltage as needed. This ensures LEDs operate at their optimal forward current, protecting them from overcurrent and maintaining consistent brightness and a longer lifespan. They are used for high-power LEDs and applications with LEDs wired in series, and some models offer dimming capabilities.
How They Work
Constant current, variable voltage: Unlike a constant voltage driver, a CC driver holds the current steady. It continuously monitors the current and adjusts the output voltage up or down to maintain that constant current, even as input voltage or temperature changes.
Feedback loop: The driver uses a feedback loop to constantly measure the output current and make automatic adjustments to the voltage.
Protection: This mechanism prevents the LEDs from receiving too much current, which can lead to overheating and burnout.
Key features
Circuit configuration: CC drivers are designed for LEDs connected in series, where the current remains constant throughout the circuit.
Dimming: Many CC drivers are dimmable, allowing for smooth brightness adjustments. Common dimming methods include 1-10V, DALI, and Triac.
Power rating: When selecting a driver, you must match its total output wattage to the combined wattage of the LED array to ensure compatibility and prevent performance issues.
Compatibility: They are suitable for high-power LEDs, including downlights and strings of LEDs wired in series.
Dip switches
DIP switches on LED drivers are small, manual switches used to configure output settings—primarily current (mA) and sometimes voltage (V) or dimming levels—without needing extra tools.
They allow for versatile, “universal” drivers to match various LED fixtures by adjusting, for example, between 200mA and 350mA. These hardware switches provide a reliable, cost-effective method to set specific, fixed outputs for lighting, with settings often adjusted in binary (1-10).
