T5 lamps are a type of slim, energy-efficient linear fluorescent tube that is 5/8ths of an inch (16mm) in diameter. They are widely used in commercial, office, and retail settings for general and task lighting due to their high luminous efficacy and a smaller footprint compared to older T8 or T12 tubes.

T5s are designed to work with electronic ballasts for instant-start, flicker-free operation and are available in various lengths, wattages, and colour temperatures.

DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) dimming for fluorescent lights involves using a digital communication protocol to control a fluorescent lamp’s brightness with high precision.

This system uses a low-voltage control signal separate from the mains power to send instructions to a DALI-compatible ballast, which then adjusts the lamp’s output. The advantages include standardized and accurate dimming curves, individual control of lamps, and interoperability between manufacturers, although the initial cost can be higher than simpler systems.

How it works

Digital Signal: Unlike analog systems, DALI uses a digital, two-way communication protocol.

Dedicated Wiring: A separate, low-voltage control cable is run alongside the mains power for the DALI signal.

Ballast Control: A DALI-compatible electronic ballast receives digital commands and adjusts the light output, often by altering the pulse width modulation (PWM) frequency.

Addressing: Each ballast has a unique DALI address, allowing for individual control, grouping, and scene-setting.

Interoperability: Because DALI is an open standard, components from different manufacturers can be used together in the same system.
