Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) are energy-efficient alternatives to incandescent bulbs that use about 75% less energy and last 6 to 15 times longer.

They work by coating a fluorescent tube with a phosphor and passing an electric current through a gas inside, which produces ultraviolet (UV) light that excites the phosphor to produce visible light. While effective, they contain a small amount of mercury, which has led to bans and a shift towards LED lighting.

How they work

A CFL is a miniature version of a standard fluorescent tube, with the glass tube often bent into a spiral or double-helix shape to fit into a standard socket.

An electric current passes through the gas inside the tube, creating an arc of ultraviolet (UV) light.

The inside of the tube is coated with a phosphor, which absorbs the UV light and re-emits it as visible light.

A ballast is built into the base of the bulb to regulate the current.

Advantages

Energy efficiency: CFLs use significantly less electricity than incandescent bulbs for the same amount of light, leading to lower energy bills.

Long lifespan: They last much longer than traditional bulbs, reducing the frequency of replacements.

Low heat output: CFLs produce less heat, making them a good option for small spaces or for growing plants where heat can be an issue.

Cost savings: Despite a higher upfront cost, their longevity and energy savings often result in overall cost savings over time.
