General information for the FLIF-G 6-80/4D/180

The DUROLIGHT FLIF-type emergency lighting units are designed according to the standard EN60598-2-22 and IEC 61347-2-7 and are suited to be mounted in lighting installations
complying with the standards VDE0108 and EN50172.

DUROLIGHT emergency lighting units are designed to energise 4-pins fluorescent lamps from battery supply in case of mains failure. They are suited to work with NiCd or NiMH-batteries,
which are located inside or near the light fitting, and are therefore designed to equip self-contained emergency light fittings.

The compact dimensions and low heat dissipation of the FLIF series make them ideally suited to be mounted in low profile maintained light fittings (e.g. those equipped with T5 fluorescent lamps). The cross-section of the unit (21.5×31.5mm) is the same as the one currently found on most electronic ballasts.

FLIF-G 6-80/4D/180 Compatibility

The lamp is fully isolated from the electronic ballast in emergency operation (4-pole relay). Additionally the mains supply of the electronic ballast is also cut during emergency (1-pole relay).
Due to microprocessor control of all the relays timing, the unit is compatible to all types of electronic ballasts (1- up to 4- lamps ballasts).

Additionally, due to the complete isolation from the mains during emergency, the unit complies to the EMC regulation in emergency operation as well as in mains operation. Attention: Due to the relay-contacts which are connecting the 4 pins of the lamp to the electronic ballast under mains operation, problems can happen with dimming ballasts.

Under dimming conditions, the current might be so small that the voltage drop across the contacts might be interpreted by the electronic ballast as a faulty lamp. Operation with dimming ballasts must be thoroughly tested before installation.

FLIF-G 6-80/4D/180 Battery type:

Normally the FLIF-types have to be used with NiCd batteries. Units with letters MH at the end of the type name are designed to be used with NiMH batteries. The charging of such batteries
is controlled and cycled by a microprocessor. The lifetime of the NiMH batteries can thus be increased by about 30%.

Safety lighting type:

The emergency lighting units can be used in safety lighting fittings of both types, i.e. those used for escape routes as well as those used for hazardous workplaces.

Visual indicator:
The following states of standard units are shown using a bicolor
LED (light emitting diode):
LED off: mains failure (below about 160V) or battery fully discharged or faulty unit.
LED flashing green: battery disconnected or charger failure
LED green: mains ok and battery connected.
LED switching from”flashing red” to „off” state: Lamp not present, faulty or wrongly connested (only during first start)

The visual indicator of the self-test units can be red or green. In case of failure the type of failure (battery, lamp,…) can thus be clearly indicated. Additionally a buzzer can be optionally
mounted for acoustic alarm.

FLIF-G 6-80/4D/180 Mounting:

The sheet-steel housing (sendzimir galvanised) has a 4.5×4 .5mm fixing slot at each end on the bottom and also on one side, in order to enable the unit to be mounted on one or the other side. Each terminal is sized to connect one 0.5 to 1.5mm2 wire.

The battery has to be plugged into a connector. The cable used to connect the LED indicator is 400mm long. The battery should be mounted at the coolest place in the fitting in order to optimise its capacity and lifetime. The ambient temperature of the battery must not exceed 50°C

Important notes regarding lamp compatibility with the FLIF-G 6-80/4D/180

All lamps using amalgam technology are not recommended for emergency lighting. They should all be tested before being used. (Example PLT-TOP from Philips) The lifetime of all lamps in emergency mode is limited to about 25 hours.

It is assumed that only quality products from well-known manufacturers are going to be used. This list is only given as an indication. No guarantee can be given for any malfunction or shortened lifetime of lamps or lamp types. All applications must be tested prior to installation. This list can be changed at any time without any prior warning.

All the T16/T5 tubes have a so-called cold spot located on one end of the tube. On Philips tubes this cold spot is located on the end where the marking has been printed. In order
to improve the emergency lighting operating mode, this cold spot i.e. the corresponding side of the tube should be connected to the pins 6 and 8 of the lamp connector. An indication should be put inside the light fitting so that the tube is inserted in the correct direction.
