ELP LDCB110 Central Battery LED Emergency Control Gear

The LDCB110 emergency LED module allows maintained operation of high power LED modules or arrays, when utilising the standard mains voltage LED control gear in-line with the Central Battery powered emergency LED control module.

The LDCB110 Central Battery module allows for maintained, hold-off or slave operation of high power LED modules or arrays.

The emergency gear is designed to operate from an 110V AC/DC Central Battery supply. For maintained operation, an integral relay disconnects the LED lighting load from the mains control gear and then connects it to the emergency control gear, which operates the LED module/array at a reduced light output from the central battery supply.

The various high power LED modules utilise different arrays of LEDs connected in series or a combination of series and parallel, and the LDCB110 range can be configured to suit any of these (output current selectable on the module). It is important to note that for maintained operation some of the LED module/array mains drivers should not be operated with an open circuit load.

To overcome this problem when first powering up or when switching between emergency and mains operations the LDCB110 module features a live in/live out relay which ensures the load is in place before the mains driver is powered up.

To ensure the correct operation of each type of high power LED module/array the correct output current should be selected on the module (see output current and operating voltage details on the following table).

In emergency lighting, Central Battery Systems (CBS) use slave and hold-off modules to manage lighting without requiring a battery at every fixture. These modules ensure that designated emergency lights turn on only when local power fails, bypassing the building’s standard wall switches.

1. Slave Modules

A slave luminaire (or slave unit) has no local battery or on/off decision-making ability. It receives power from a centralized battery bank and inverter system.

Operation: The slave module sits in-line with the light fixture. When a localized or building-wide power failure occurs, the central battery kicks in, and the slave module directs this emergency power (usually 50V, 110V, or 240V AC/DC) to illuminate the dedicated emergency LED or lamp.

Benefit: Because the batteries are centralized in one cabinet, maintenance is drastically simplified. You only have to test and replace batteries at the central hub rather than across hundreds of individual ceiling fixtures.

2. Hold-Off Modules

A hold-off module (or hold-off relay) is used in conjunction with “switched maintained” lighting circuits. It prevents an emergency light from needlessly turning on during a standard power outage if the light was purposely turned off.

Operation: The module requires two power feeds: an un-switched mains feed (for emergency detection) and a switched mains feed (for standard on/off room control). If the general power goes out, but the room’s light switch was off, the hold-off module detects this and keeps the emergency light “held off” to conserve central battery power. As soon as local power fails while the light is active (or if the fire alarm triggers), the relay releases and the emergency light turns on.

Benefit: It allows standard, everyday luminaires to double as emergency exit lights without shining when the building is unoccupied and the lights are turned off.
