High-Pressure Sodium (HPS) lamps are highly efficient, long-lasting, and powerful, emitting a distinct yellow-orange, red-spectrum light ideal for plant flowering (80-140 lumens per watt, 24,000+ hour lifespan). They are widely used in commercial hydroponics for growth and formerly for municipal street lighting. While effective, they require specialized ballasts, have poor colour rendering, and are being replaced by LEDs.

Technology & Operation: HPS lamps are high-intensity discharge (HID) lights that use a mixture of xenon (as a starter gas), sodium, and mercury to produce light. They require a high-
voltage pulse from a ballast to start, and often take time to reach full brightness.

Horticultural Use: They are a staple in hydroponics for the flowering and fruiting stages due to their red-orange spectrum. Common types include 600W (most popular/efficient) and 1000W double-ended (DE) lamps, often paired with reflectors and digital ballasts.

Performance Metrics: They provide 80-140 lumens per watt and have a lifespan of 20,000 to 24,000+ hours.

Advantages:

  • High efficiency for both photosynthesis and general lighting.
  • Highly durable and consistent in output.
  • Provides beneficial heat for plants in cold environments.

Disadvantages:

Poor Colour Rendering Index (CRI of 20-30), meaning colours look unnatural.
Require an external ballast.
Being phased out for outdoor, municipal, and residential applications in favour of more energy-efficient LED technology.

Metal halide (MH) lamps are high-intensity discharge (HID) lights that produce intense, white light by passing an electric arc through vaporized mercury and metal halide salts. Known for high efficacy, excellent colour rendering, and long life (10,000–30,000 hours), they are ideal for industrial, commercial, sports arena, and street lighting.
