Mercury vapor lamps are high-intensity discharge lights that produce intense light, heat, and UVB radiation, making them useful for applications like outdoor lighting, factories, and as a heat/UVB source for reptiles in large enclosures.
They are energy-efficient and long-lasting, but are not dimmable, require a warm-up period to reach full brightness, and have a “cool-down” period before they can be re-ignited if turned off. When they break, the mercury inside is hazardous, so the area should be evacuated, ventilated, and the waste should be handled as hazardous material.
Metal halide (MH) lamps are high-intensity discharge (HID) lights that produce bright, white light by passing an electric arc through a gas mixture of vaporized mercury and metal halides. They are known for high luminous efficacy, long lifespan (compared to older technologies), and excellent colour rendering, making them suitable for large indoor and outdoor areas like sports arenas, warehouses, and streets. However, they require a ballast to operate and have a warm-up period to reach full brightness.
About Wire Wound Ballasts
Wire-wound ballasts, commonly referred to as magnetic or electromagnetic ballasts, are traditional lighting control devices designed to regulate the voltage and current supplied to discharge lamps, such as fluorescent tubes and High-Intensity Discharge (HID) lamps. They consist of copper wire wound around an iron core to create an inductor that restricts current flow, preventing lamps from drawing too much power and burning out.
Key Characteristics and Functions
Operating Principle: They use electromagnetic induction to manage current. When power is turned on, they provide a high-voltage surge to ignite the lamp, then limit the current to a steady, lower level once the lamp is running.
Components: They consist of a copper coil, an iron core, and often a capacitor.
Whenever an electric light goes on around the world, Vossloh-Schwabe is likely to have made a key contribution to ensuring that everything works at the flick of a switch.
