Description

Existalite XHF 28W 2D

The XHF 28W 2D is a combined emergency and high-frequency (HF) ballast, that is mounted on a gear tray along with the appropriate NiCD batteries. The XHF 28W 2D is manufactured from now defunct British manufacturer Existalite.

It is designed to be housed inside a round or square bulkhead fitting and powers a 28W 2D compact fluorescent (CFL) lamp.

Core Features

Function: Serves as the internal control gear, lampholder, and emergency backup for 2D light fittings.

Emergency Mode: Provides 3 hours of emergency lighting if the main power fails.

Recharge Time: Typically features a 24-hour recharge cycle for its battery.

The Lamp: The 28W 2D (also known as a butterfly or double-turn bulb) produces around 2050 lumens and is available in 2-pin (GR8) or 4-pin (GR10q) formats.

2D combo ballasts are integrated electrical units that combine a standard high-frequency ballast (used to regulate current for fluorescent 2D lamps) and an emergency lighting inverter with a battery pack. They allow a single light fitting to provide both normal illumination and emergency escape lighting in the event of a power failure.

Core Features & Benefits

Dual Functionality: Powers the lamp during everyday use, and seamlessly switches to the battery pack to provide power if the mains supply cuts out.

Space-Saving: Integrates two essential pieces of hardware (ballast and emergency inverter) into one compact enclosure, making them ideal for small fixtures like bulkheads.

Lamp Compatibility: Typically engineered to run 4-pin 2D compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) in various wattages (e.g., 16W, 28W, or 38W).

Battery Back-up: Usually designed to run on a 3-cell or 4-cell rechargeable battery pack, providing up to 3 hours of emergency lighting duration.

Automatic Safety Features: Often includes features like deep discharge protection, intelligent voltage guard, and short-circuit protection to maintain battery health.

2D lamps (also known as Double D or butterfly lamps) are flat, compact fluorescent or LED bulbs designed to provide even light distribution in shallow or enclosed fittings. They are a common lighting staple for both domestic and commercial spaces.

Key Characteristics

Design: They feature a flattened, square-style tube layout. This makes them perfect for low-profile, space-constrained fixtures like bulkhead lights.

Energy Efficiency: Traditionally compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), modern LED replacements are highly energy-efficient and can cut power usage by more than half compared to older CFL bulbs.

Common Applications: Because of their wide beam angle and diffuse light, they are heavily used in stairwells, corridors, offices, bathrooms, and exterior building bulkheads

Fitting Types

Before replacing a 2D lamp, it is crucial to check the base, as they come in two main configurations:

2-Pin (GR8 Base): Designed for switch-start control gear. The base is usually square with a push-fit mechanism.

4-Pin (GR10q Base): Designed for electronic control gear. These typically allow for dimming, provided the control gear supports it.

The batteries on the XHF 28W 2D can be replaced with 2 x 2DH4-0T4 per module.

Existalite is a brand name and former manufacturer specializing in emergency lighting control gear, inverters, and backup modules. Historically an independent company, the brand became a division under the Thomas & Betts group (which is now part of ABB).

Core Products and Applications

Emergency Inverters & Combo Units: They are primarily known for manufacturing ballast-inverter modules that keep fluorescent and LED lighting operational during power outages.

Guide-LITE Low Location Lighting: A Thomas & Betts system using modular LED strips designed for maritime and offshore escape routes (e.g., ferries, oil rigs) to guide passengers through thick smoke.

Industrial & Marine Lighting: Existalite components are widely utilized in commercial marine settings, construction sites, and emergency backup boxes.
