Alkaline batteries are disposable, single-use power cells that rely on zinc and manganese dioxide chemistry with an alkaline electrolyte. They provide a stable 1.5 V output, offer high energy density, and boast a long shelf life of up to 10 years.

Key Characteristics

Voltage: Typically start at around 1.5 V to 1.6 V per cell and drop gradually to 1.0 V over their usable lifespan.

Shelf Life: Very low self-discharge rates make them excellent for emergency kits and infrequently used devices.

Cost-effective: Generally the cheapest battery type on a per-unit basis.

Best Applications

Alkaline batteries are ideal for everyday electronic devices with constant, low-to-moderate energy consumption.

Common applications include:

  • TV and audio remote controls
  • Wall clocks and radios
  • Flashlights and portable game controllers
  • Smoke detectors

How is the rated capacity of a battery determined?

The capacity of a battery is typically expressed in milli -Amp hours (mAh). For primary batteries, samples are discharged at a specific current drain (i.e. 25mA) and time recorded to a cut off
voltage (i.e. 0.8 volts). The time (hours) it takes the battery to reach the cutoff voltage is then multiplied by the current drain to establish the mAh capacity of the battery. Rechargeable batteries (NiMH) are rated based on a C/5 discharge following a C/10 charge.

Does the mAh capacity of a battery change with the drain rate?

A battery is typically much more fuel efficient at lower current drains. Therefore, available capacity will drop significantly as drain rates and/or the voltage functional endpoint increases.

How long can I store batteries?

When stored at room temperature (i.e. 70°F/ 21°C, Cylindrical Alkaline batteries have a shelf life of 5 to 7 years and cylindrical Super Heavy-Duty (carbon zinc) 3 to 5 years. Storing the
batteries at higher temperatures, shortens the shelf life.

Trilogy locks are commercial-grade electronic, standalone keyless door locks manufactured by Trilogy Locks. Highly regarded for reliability, they offer keypad and proxy entry, user code tracking (audit trails), and wireless networking capabilities. They are built to last in high-traffic environments like schools, hospitals, and offices without complex wiring.

Key Features and Models

Trilogy T2 (DL2700 Series): The most popular standalone unit. It can store up to 100 to 2,000 user codes depending on the sub-model, including Master, Manager, and Basic User levels. It also features built-in mechanical key override.

Weatherproof Options (WP): Built to handle environments ranging from -35° C to +66° C, making them ideal for exterior gates and doors.

Battery Operation: Powered by 5 AA batteries, these locks can typically perform 100,000 to 200,000 cycles before requiring a battery change.

Lockdown & Audit Trails: Advanced models record thousands of previous door events and feature remote-release lockdown functionality (great for classroom safety).
