HID (high-intensity discharge) lamps produce light by passing an electric current through a gas-filled arc tube, which vaporizes the metallic content and creates an arc. They are known for their high efficiency and bright illumination, making them ideal for large spaces like streetlights, sports stadiums, and warehouses.
Key components include the lamp, a ballast to regulate power, and often an igniter to start the lamp.
How they work
An electrical arc is created between two electrodes inside a gas- and metal-salt-filled quartz or ceramic arc tube.
The arc vaporizes the metallic salts, creating a plasma that emits a bright light.
A ballast is necessary to regulate the current and voltage to the lamp, as it requires a high-voltage pulse to start before the voltage can be lowered once it’s running.
Advantages
High efficiency: They produce a high amount of light output per watt of energy consumed.
Long lifespan: HID lamps can last for many thousands of hours, from 5,000 to over 24,000 hours for some types.
Bright illumination: They are designed to brightly illuminate large areas, making them suitable for applications like streetlights, stadiums, and large indoor spaces.
Disadvantages
Warm-up time: They require a significant warm-up period (two to six minutes) before reaching full brightness.
Restrike time: If the power is briefly interrupted, the lamp will not relight immediately. It needs to cool down before it can be re-ignited, similar to the initial warm-up time.
Colour rendering: Some HID lamps can have a lower colour rendering index (CRI), meaning colours may not appear as vibrant or accurate as with other lighting types.
