A constant current non-dimmable LED driver is a specifalised power supply that provides a fixed, unwavering electrical current (measured in milliamps, like 350mA or 700mA) to power specific high-powered LEDs. It dynamically adjusts its voltage to keep the current steady, operating only as an on/off switch without any brightness adjustment features.

How They Work

Fixed Current: It ensures the exact amount of current needed by the LED flows through continuously. If the current fluctuates, it causes variations in brightness and can shorten the lifespan of the LED.

No Dimming: These are purely “on/off” drivers. They do not support Triac, 1-10V, or DALI dimmers. Attempting to attach a dimmer to a non-dimmable driver will result in flickering, buzzing, or damage to the unit.

Variable Voltage: While the current (mA) is fixed, the voltage fluctuates within a specific range depending on how many LEDs are connected in the circuit.

The name is derived from osmium and Wolfram, German for tungsten. Both elements were commonly used for lighting filaments at the time the company was founded.

In 2020 ams AG acquired the German lighting, LED, and opto-semiconductor manufacturer OSRAM. Since then, the company operates under the name ams OSRAM.

The ams OSRAM portfolio includes light emitters, sensors and CMOS ICs with embedded software solutions as well as lighting systems and specialty lamps for automotive, industrial and entertainment applications. The company mainly address the automotive, industrial and medical markets, as well as selected fields of consumer electronics.
