A Constant Voltage (CV) 1-10V dimmer controls low-voltage LED lights (typically 12V or 24V) by varying a low-voltage DC signal between 1V and 10V. It sets brightness linearly: 10V provides 100% brightness, while 1V (or 0V) reduces the light to its lowest dimming point (usually 10%).
How it Works in Constant Voltage Systems
Unlike constant current systems which feed a specific amperage to series-wired lights, CV dimmers are used for setups where lights are wired in parallel (like LED strips or under-cabinet puck lights).
The Signal: A standard 1-10V dimmer generates or receives a control signal on a separate pair of wires (usually grey and purple) from the main AC power.
Turning the Light Off: Because 1-10V signals usually only dim down to 10% brightness, most wall dimmers for this type feature a mechanical relay. When you turn the knob completely down to “off”, it cuts the main line voltage to the LED driver to ensure the light goes totally dark.
No Buzzing/Flicker: Since dimming is controlled by a low-voltage signal rather than chopping up the high-voltage AC mains power, this method avoids the buzzing or flickering commonly seen with traditional trailing-edge dimmers.
