Constant current LED drivers with leading and trailing edge compatibility are specialised power supplies that regulate current to LEDs while allowing you to control brightness using standard domestic dimmers. They ensure stable, flicker-free dimming across different dimmer switch technologies.
Here is the breakdown of how these technologies work and why they are paired together:
1. Constant Current (CC) vs. Dimming
Constant Current: LEDs are current-driven devices. A CC driver provides a fixed electrical current (e.g.350mA or 700mA) regardless of how the voltage changes in the circuit. Because LEDs have varying voltage drops as they heat up, a constant current ensures the light output remains stable and the LEDs don’t overheat or degrade prematurely.
Wiring Setup: CC drivers require LEDs to be wired in a series so that the exact same amount of current passes through every light in the chain.
2. Leading Edge vs. Trailing Edge
Traditional wall dimmers control light by “chopping” the AC power sine wave, effectively reducing the total power sent to the light. The difference lies in where they chop the wave:
Leading Edge (Triac): These are older, traditional dimmers designed for incandescent bulbs. They cut the power wave at the beginning (leading edge) of every AC cycle. Because they can cause sharp electrical spikes, they often result in flickering or buzzing when used with delicate LED drivers.
Trailing Edge: These are modern, electronic dimmers. They cut the power wave at the end (trailing edge) of the AC cycle. This creates a much smoother power flow, making them quieter, more precise, and highly recommended for modern LED drivers.
