High Pressure Sodium Lamps

HPS (High Pressure Sodium) lamps are a type of high-intensity discharge lamp known for their energy efficiency and high light output, producing a distinctive yellow-orange glow.

They are commonly used for outdoor area lighting like streetlights and for commercial growing, especially during the flowering and fruiting stages of plant growth, due to their intense, deep-penetrating light spectrum. Key features include a long lifespan, a ballast to regulate current, and a warm-up period to reach full brightness.

How they work

An electric current is passed between two electrodes at the ends of a ceramic arc tube.

The arc tube contains a mixture of mercury, metal salts, and sodium.

Xenon gas is used as a starter gas to help strike the arc.

As the arc is struck, the xenon and mercury are ionized and the arc tube heats up.

As the temperature and pressure increase, the sodium vaporizes and the characteristic yellow-orange light of the HPS lamp is produced.

The outer glass envelope insulates the arc tube and contains a vacuum or inert gas to help manage heat.

Metal halide Lamps

Metal halide (MH) lamps are high-intensity discharge (HID) lights that produce bright, white light by passing an electric arc through a gas mixture of vaporized mercury and metal halides.

They are known for high luminous efficacy, long lifespan (compared to older technologies), and excellent colour rendering, making them suitable for large indoor and outdoor areas like sports arenas, warehouses, and streets. However, they require a ballast to operate and have a warm-up period to reach full brightness.

How they work

An electric arc is struck between two electrodes inside a quartz or ceramic arc tube.

The arc vaporizes mercury and other metal halides (compounds of metal and halogens like bromine or iodine).

The mixture of vaporized gas and metal halides creates a high-intensity, full-spectrum light when energized.

Venture Lighting acquired the Parmar brand and offers a wide range of lighting control gear, such as ballasts and ignitors, for various applications, including specialist uses like road and tunnel lighting. Parmar was originally a manufacturing company formed by Mr. Parry and Mr. Martin, and the “Venture Parmar” range is known for its quality and performance in both electromagnetic and electronic HID control gear
