Description
Mackwell S3CHE M3/M1
Fluorescent Emergency Module
Primian-1™ modules operate a wide range of 4 pin fluorescent lamps and each module is fitted with a lamp optimisation link to ensure the best output and duration across the lamp range.
S3CHE Technology Features
Switch Mode Power Supply
Mackwell patented Switch Mode Power Supply provides total short circuit protection, regulated output and complies with all relevant standards.
Ballast Delay Relay
All versions are fitted with an additional relay to switch off the power to the HF ballast during emergency lighting test.
Indicator
The LED indicator is illuminated when a charge is flowing to the cells. Flexible orange and pink leads connect the indicator to the module. The indicator requires an 8mm hole.
Voltage Sensing Circuit
The AC power supply is sensed so that switching occurs at between 60% and 85% of the nominal mains.
Emergency Performance
The inverter module incorporates deep discharge protection (DDP), to prevent damage to the batteries caused by deep discharge and possible subsequent reverse cell polarity. The units are the same for 3 hour or 1 hour duration, using 4.5Ah NiCd or 4Ah NiMH cells for 3 hour (link wire fitted), or either 1.5Ah NiCd or 1.6Ah NiMH cells for 1 hour (link wire removed)
S3CHE Key features:
• Switch Mode Power Supply runs cooler than traditional iron core transformers
• Selectable 3 hour or 1 hour duration
• Use with NiCd or NiMH cells • Maintained 5 pole ballast switching
• Small size enables simple installation
• Optimisation link for wide range of lamps
• Deep Discharge Protection

Fluorescent emergency control gear (ECG) provides backup power to keep fluorescent lights on during mains failure, crucial for safety in buildings; it’s an integrated unit (inverter/ballast with a battery) that automatically switches the lamp from normal power to battery power, delivering reduced light (around 10-30%) for escape routes, often using microchips for testing and reliability, though increasingly being replaced by LED systems due to bans and efficiency.
How it Works
Normal Operation: The ECG’s internal battery charges from the mains supply, while the normal ballast runs the fluorescent tube.
Power Failure: When mains power fails, the ECG disconnects the normal ballast and uses its battery to power the tube.
Emergency Output: It provides lower light output (e.g., 10-30%) to save energy, maintaining illumination for escape.
Power Restoration: On return of mains power, it switches back, allowing the normal system to take over.
