SOX lamps are a type of low-pressure sodium lamp, historically used for road and area lighting, known for their high energy efficiency and monochromatic orange light. They have a very high luminous efficacy, meaning they produce a lot of light for the power they consume, and they are effective in mist and fog. Due to advances in technology, they are now largely being replaced by metal halide and especially LED lights, which provide better colour rendering, though some LED SOX replacements exist.
How they work and their characteristics
Light production: SOX lamps work by creating an electrical arc through vaporized sodium metal.
Colour: They emit a monochromatic (single-color) orange-yellow light, which makes them poor at rendering colors accurately but excellent for visibility in poor weather conditions.
Efficiency: They were very energy efficient and offered more lumens per watt than other lamps of their time, making them cost-effective for lighting large areas like roads.
Lifespan: They have a long lifespan, but maintenance cycles have been improved over time with newer models.
Applications
Primary use: Their most common application was for street and road lighting, but they were also used for canals, tunnels, and security lighting.
The transition to LED
Reason for change: The main reasons for the shift are the poor colour rendering of SOX lamps and the greater efficiency and flexibility of modern technologies, particularly LED.
Modern alternatives: Many modern SOX lamps are now LED replacements that mimic the shape and functionality of traditional SOX lamps but provide brighter, whiter light.
