How a switch start ballast works

Ignition: When the light is switched on, the starter switch completes a circuit that heats the lamp’s filaments. The ballast then provides a high voltage to start the arc, which causes the light to flicker several times before it fully ignites.

Regulation: Once the lamp is lit, the ballast’s magnetic choke limits the current to prevent the lamp from drawing too much power and burning out.

Components: A complete switch start system includes a magnetic ballast (choke), a separate starter switch, and the lamp itself.

When to consider a replacement

If you notice any of the following signs, a switch start ballast may need to be replaced.

  • The light takes a long time to come on or flickers excessively.
  • There is an audible buzzing sound coming from the fixture.
  • The light’s quality or color consistency is compromised.

T8 Fluorescent tubes

T8 fluorescent tubes are 26mm (approximately 1-inch) diameter linear lighting, featuring a G13 bi-pin socket (13mm between pins) widely used in residential, commercial, and industrial settings. Known for superior energy efficiency (often ~30% savings over older T12s), they generally last 15,000–20,000 hours and are compatible with both traditional and electronic ballasts.

Key Characteristics of T8 Tubes:

Dimensions: Roughly 26mm (1 inch) in diameter, smaller than T12 (38mm) but larger than T5 (16mm).

Lengths & Wattage: Common lengths include 2ft,3ft,4ft and 6ft. The length is directly linked to the wattage, which typically ranges from 10W to 75W.

Ballast Requirement: T8 tubes can operate on conventional ballasts (requiring a starter) or electronic ballasts (no starter, flicker-free).

Common Applications: Ideal for garages, offices, schools, and workshop lighting due to high light output.

Colour Temperatures: Available in a wide range, from warm white to daylight.

T8 vs. Other Tubes:

T8 vs. T12: T8s are more efficient and brighter than T12s. While they share the same G13 base, they should not be randomly interchanged without ensuring the ballast is appropriate.
T8 vs. T5: T5s are narrower, have different lengths (5cm shorter), and only work on electronic ballasts, say www.any-lamp.co.uk.
