High-Pressure Sodium (SON) lamps are highly efficient, long-lasting discharge lights widely used for streetlights, parking lots, and industrial spaces. They emit a characteristic golden-yellow light and require a dedicated ballast and igniter to operate. While highly reliable, they have poor colour rendering capabilities.

Key Characteristics & Technology

How They Work: SON lamps contain a narrow, translucent aluminum-oxide ceramic arc tube filled with xenon gas and a sodium-mercury amalgam. When voltage is applied, the xenon ionizes, vaporizing the mercury and sodium to create an intense arc discharge.

Light Spectrum: They produce a distinct, broad-spectrum yellow/orange glow at a warm color temperature (around 2000K). Because the colour rendering index (CRI) is very low, it can be difficult to distinguish colors under their light.

Lifespan & Efficiency: SON lamps are incredibly efficient, often achieving over 130 lm/W, and boast an exceptionally long lifespan, sometimes lasting up to 36,000 hours.

Start-Up Time: They are not instant-on. They go through a distinct warm-up routine where the light transitions from a faint pink/blue to green, finally shifting to a bright yellow-orange as the pressure increases (pressure broadening).

SON lamp ignitors generate the high-voltage pulses (up to 5kV) required to strike an electrical arc and ignite high-pressure sodium vapor. Depending on your lighting system, the ignitor is either a standalone electrical component wired alongside the ballast, or built directly into the lamp itself.

Key Differences: Internal vs. External

Internal Ignitors (SON-I): The starting circuitry is housed inside the lamp itself. These are designed for circuits with only a ballast; if you place an internal-ignitor lamp on a circuit that already has an external ignitor, it can cause damage or flickering. You can easily identify these by checking for an “I” printed within a small triangle on the lamp glass.

External Ignitors (SON-E / SON-T): The ignitor is a separate black or white component mounted on the gear tray. These lamps feature a “E” stamped on the glass.
