1-10V electronic sliders are specialized, low-voltage manual dimmers designed to control dimmable lighting ballasts (such as fluorescent tubes) and LED drivers. By adjusting a linear slider, you send a low DC voltage signal that varies the light output between 1% and 100%.

How They Work

The Control Signal: The ballast or driver supplies a small 1-10V DC control signal. The slider acts as a variable resistor (potentiometer), adjusting this voltage to control how much current the ballast provides to the lamp.

Electrical Isolation: High-quality sliders (like the Varilight 1-10V Dimmer Module) feature electrically isolated circuits, meaning the mains switch and the dimming signal are separate.

Turning Off: A 1-10V dimmer can interrupt the signal but typically cannot switch off the mains power to the ballast. Therefore, these sliders usually include a physical push-on/push-off switch to completely cut power when turning the lights off.

Key Technical Specs

Control Current Limits: Dimmers have a maximum current they can sink from the ballasts (usually up to 20mA or 50mA). You must ensure the combined control current of all connected ballasts doesn’t overload the dimmer.

Capacity: Many standard sliders (e.g., from Lutron Ballast Controls) can safely manage a high electrical inrush, making them suitable for commercial and multiple-fixture setups.

Wiring: Because they use an analog signal, these controls require an additional “dimming pair” of low-voltage wires (usually violet and gray) ran in parallel to every fixture on the circuit, alongside standard mains wiring.
