T5 lamps are a type of slim, energy-efficient linear fluorescent tube that is 5/8ths of an inch (16mm) in diameter. They are widely used in commercial, office, and retail settings for general and task lighting due to their high luminous efficacy and a smaller footprint compared to older T8 or T12 tubes.

T5s are designed to work with electronic ballasts for instant-start, flicker-free operation and are available in various lengths, wattages, and colour temperatures.

HF (high frequency) ballasts are electronic devices that power fluorescent lights by converting low-frequency power to a high frequency, which eliminates flicker and improves energy efficiency. They perform the functions of traditional ballasts (providing initial voltage and regulating current) in a single, more efficient unit. Their advantages include instant start, no flicker, lower energy consumption, and longer lamp life.

How they work

Convert frequency: They convert the standard 50–60 Hz line voltage to a much higher frequency, typically 20–120 kHz.

Simplify components: Unlike older electromagnetic systems, which used separate components like a starter, capacitor, and ballast, the HF ballast is a single electronic unit that replaces all of them.

Instant start: The high frequency allows for an instant start, eliminating the flickering that can occur with older systems.

Regulate current: Like all ballasts, they provide the high initial voltage to start the lamp and then regulate the current to keep it from becoming excessively high
